Slobot goes to the Spartanburg Nature Science Center!

Slobot was wandering around the Spartanburg Arts Center when he entered a room...

and, inside that room, were frightening things...

things that bared fangs...

and bears that bared fangs!

Slobot was sure that he would be consumed!

But Slobot soon realized that Kodiak bears and piranha are not native to the Arts Center.

In fact, it had become abundantly clear that Slobot was in no danger...

he had simply discovered the Spartanburg Nature Science Center!

The original Spartanburg Arts Center opened across from Converse College in 1969.

It would move to the former Southside Elementary School in 1972.

The Nature Science Center, itself, originally opened in February of 1978.

Today the Science Center and its residents...

like this California King Snake...

are preparing for a move to a new home in the Chapman Cultural Center.

The Science Center was originally helmed by David Scott but the captain of the ship for the last 20-odd years has been none other than this man...

or, rather, this man...

Mr. John Green!

John Green spent his formative years in Ohio and, after a brief stint in New York City, Mr. Green found himself in Spartanburg. Since then he has been educating Spartanburg's young people and touting the wonders of wildlife in the upstate, wildlife such as the snapping turtle, "Chief"...

and this Red Eared Slider.

Slobot would like to thank Mr. John Green and hopes to see YOU at the Spartanburg Nature Science Center!
